#CTFringe17 - The Sisters Ugly

October 4, 2017

The Sisters Ugly directed by Onida Cowan concluded its Cape Town Fringe run on Sunday, 1 October 2017. The production offers a glimpse into the lives of the stepsisters from the popular pantomime Cinderella. It is a theatrical piece written and performed by Dianne Simpson, who attempts to display/depict the various shades of the presumed villains instead of their stereotypical standard of ugly evil.

This production is dramatic, witty and very thought-provoking and also features songs from popular artists such as: Elton John; Sara Bareilles, Queen and many more. The story is based on the ugly sisters and is also about the importance of family and the selfishness of the sisters and how completely unaware they are of their surroundings as well as what has been transpiring, causing them to behave in a way no one ever saw coming.

In this story, we get to witness the various sides of the sisters and also includes stereotyping in which people are able to relate to in some way or another. Audiences are able to get a glimpse into the lives of the siblings in order to gain a better understanding as to the reasoning behind their strange behaviour and also because of the way they treat other people as well. This story originates from the creator of the acclaimed Rose Red, in which Dianne can also be seen.

With regards to future productions, it has been mentioned that this production will also be touring Johannesburg with only two performances at the Foxwood Theatre in Houghton on 2nd and 3rd December respectively, with a possibility of another performance at Theatre on the Square. More details will be made available closer to the time, so please keep an eye out on social media for that one. So, to all the theatre lovers in Jozi, here is an opportunity for you to go out and witness a sterling performance from the remarkably talented, Dianne Simpson.
