A display of colour, glitz and glamour in the Absolutely Fabulous Drag Show.

August 7, 2017

“The Absolutely Fabulous Drag Show" came to life for 2 nights on Friday 04 and Saturday 05 August at The Artscape Theatre as part of the Woman Humanity Arts Festival 2017. Stylishly directed by Bazil Appollis, the production, features local drag divas; Angel Lalamore (of gay cabaret 3D trio fame), Kat Gilardi, Tiara Harwood, Vida Fantabisher and SA’s Got Talent 2016 runner-up, Manila von Teez.

Hosted by the multi-talented comedian Soli Philander, who went digging through his own wardrobe to reveal some of the most outrageous and out-of-this-world characters from way back when, while music legend Camillo Lombard skilfully maintains a relaxed mellow tempo in the foreground.

Cape Town has long-maintained a special drag tradition that dates back to the early 1930's, especially in the well known, vibrant District Six. The colourful dresses, hair & make-up as well as the vast variety of heels and false eyelashes worn by each and every talented drag performer still play out in full glory in and around the city.

These performances, which occur regularly every weekend, are often hosted in clubs/bars which most people are not aware about,  especially if you are not a regular audience member at such high class bars/clubs and only provide to those select few who attend there regularly.

The production also utilizes short documentary-style video clips, allowing the audience to into delve into their world as they share personal stories about their life’s difficulties, coming out, and their journey towards self discovery before  the glitz and glamour.

These videos was a natural display showcasing each of the queens out of drag, before they grace the stage as their true selves. I'm sure it gave those who needed the motivation and encouragement, the necessary will-power for a life-changing decision.

Colourful dresses, classyfeathers to complete those Ab Fab dresses, heels with  accompanied by an imaculate lighting design by Faheem Bardien, all came together to celebrate the art of "lip sync", seduction and gender identification.

Angel Lalamore of gay cabaret 3D trio fame, put on a performance that left the audience wanting more and more and without a doubt, in stitches with some of their most hilarious and comical moments. The "Who's-Who" of drag divas came out in their numbers and performed to a packed arena and certainly kept the audience entertained throughout the entire evening with their fabulous display of music and light!

The #AbFabDragShow formed part of the Annual Women Humanity Arts Festival which commences during the month of August at Artscape Theatre centre. Now in its 11th year, the festival focuses on humanity, women and disability by not only celebrating the bravest souls of our society, but also addressing the challenges they may face.
