#CTFringe17 - Girls Just Wanna Have Fun
Girls Just Wanna Have Fun is a Cape Town Fringe 2017 production, written and directed by the talented Nicola Hanekom. It was presented by ACT Cape Town. The cast consists of some of ACT 3rd Year Professional Program students who display an outstanding performance within this story and who really go to great lengths to ensure that audiences are kept on the edge of their seats. The cast, in no particular order, are as follows: Atlanta Johnson; Ashleigh Van der Hoven; Chloe Papademetriou; Cody Mountain; Joel Rosenblatt; Keziah Gabriel; Meghan Oberholzer.
This production is was previously staged at the Galloway theatre, and sold out quickly! It has since returned for another (very successful) run at the 2017 US Woordfees.
The production delves into the intertwined lives of a group of 7 strangers, who are rocked to their foundations by the extreme misuse and abuse of various drugs in sport, otherwise known as GHB. Audiences entered not knowing what to expect, but the production had audiences leaving in shock and amazement with outstanding performances, a powerful storyline and brilliant execution.
The story is brought to life and depicts some important and hardcore moments to the extreme, showcasing the privilege, chauvinistic culture as well as a distasteful disregard to women and in how they all clash with one another. Hanekom's hard-gripping scriptwriting/storytelling takes quite a few daring angles at a sensitive yet serious content matter that not many people would wish to bring up at any given time in life.
There are quite a number of "hair-raising, goosebump" moments and if you have not yet seen it, you are certainly in for a gripping production with a variety of twists and thrilling visuals with unforgettable performances from a very talented cast.
