Belinda Davids pays tribute to Whitney Houston in The Greatest Love of All

Thousands of die-hard Whitney Houston fans have the opportunity to relive the musical magic that the The Voice of Pop has brought to the world in a production called The Greatest Love of All: The #WhitneyHoustonShow. Featuring the breathtaking vocal talent of Belinda Davids, a seven-piece live band, and four-piece dance act, the production returns to the Artscape Opera Theatre for a three-week season.

From childhood, Davids was an avid follower of Houston, and had her first experience of performing Whitney when she was in primary school. Her professional career started at the age of 14. Having never had any vocal training, she grew up singing in church, and admired that Houston had a pure, crisp and clean voice. Davids has a vocal range which allows her to sing any genre of music. As a child, her inspirations were Aretha Franklin, Chaka Khan, Anita Baker, and, of course, Whitney Houston.

The production, produced by Showtime Australia, took nearly a year to conceptualise, and after a lengthy auditioning process, Davids emerged as the ideal person and voice to pay tribute to Houston, and rightfully so, as this was a performance that Davids has been practicing 25 years for. Through the show, Davids performs some of Houston’s greatest hits that span her 29-year music career. In the performance, Davids uses the colours in Whitney’s make up, and costume to resemble her onstage style.

The production is more than just another tribute show, as Davids translates a perfect ‘Whitney’ experience through various theatrical effects. The show is a fitting tribute to the late icon. Audiences were promised a spectacular concert experience, and the show lived up to that promise. Since its debut, the show has been updated in terms of new costuming so the experience will be fresh for audiences who has seen the show before. The harmony between the acts on stage is a part of the dynamic that ensures that this leg of the tour stands out from the rest.

The production has gained immense following and backing when it first opened in 2013 in Johannesburg, selling out a six-week season. After this, the show was further exposed to an even wider audience in countries such as the United Kingdom, Australia, New Zealand, Dubai, and the North America. After this run, Showtime Australia is set to tour with this production to countries such as Norway, Sweden and Switzerland.

Following its open night, Capetonians were abuzz, as she impressed crowds with her performance of I Will Always Love You, I Have Nothing, I’m Every Woman, One Moment in Time, Run to You, Saving All My Love, Queen of the night, I Wanna Dance with Somebody, and many more Whitney tracks.

Catch Belinda Davids as Whitney Houston in The Greatest Love of All: The Whitney Houston Show at the Artscape Opera House until 16 July. Tickets are available at Computicket or at the Artscape Box Office. Share your show experience on social media by using the hashtag #WhitneyHoustonShow.
