The creative elements of Jason Jacobs and KleiSand Productions

Jason Jacobs is one of South Africa's most exciting, young, emerging theatre makers. The former UCT graduate has been creatively involved in numerous successful productions. He was the Fleur du Cap nominee for the Rosalie van der Gucht prize for New Directors (2016), and was awarded the Theatre Arts Admin Collective Emerging Theatre Directors Bursary in 2016. He is also a published poet and the recipient of the 2017 New Voice at the Klein Karoo National Arts Festival.

Jacobs is also the creative director for KleiSand Productions, the resident company at the Theatre Arts Admin Collective and the lead facilitator for the Mothertongue Youth Arts Project in McGregor, a project dedicated to creating new theatre works for 0-7 year olds in the region.

Jason’s work has been recognized by landmark arts institutions such as the Artscape Theatre Centre, where he has staged Kalahari Swaan (2015) and But,The Land (2016), as part of the New Voices programme.

Jason has also written and directed In Wag Van, which had it’s debut at the Theatre Arts Admin Collective in June 2016. He is also the director of Stofrooi, a physical-theatre piece that was originally performed at the Obs Family Festival. The production went on to be staged at the 2016 Cape Town Fringe Festival, and invites schools, children, teachers and parents to have an open dialogue about the societal expectations regarding masculinity that many find difficult to discuss.

After a short showcase at the US Woordfees, he will be sharing three KleiSand productions with various audiences at the 2017 KKNK in Oudtshoorn, namely Stofrooi, In Wag Van and Kalahari Swaan.

He recently returned from Bologna, Italy, where he creatively executed a production specifically for young audiences. This was powered by ASSITEJ SA and the Cradle of Creativity festival in partnership with Magnet Theatre and Ekhaya. Jason cares a great deal for theatre for young audiences and cultivates future theatre investors with innovative productions such as: Splish, Splash, Splosh!, which was his very first production he directed for children between the ages of 5-7 years.

Jason enjoys working with young, dynamic artists, who does it all in the name of telling stories. He likes to explore new ways of storytelling, and always follows his gut, not bound to a specific directing style. He draws inspiration from his family, friends and loved ones. His peers keep him happy and motivated. He is always busy creating opportunities for himself and KleiSand Productions. He is thankful and honoured to be able to share his work with others. He hopes to inspire theatre makers, writers and creatives to never stop telling stories - no matter how difficult it may be.

Tickets for Kalahari Swaan, Stofrooi and In Wag Van are going for R100 respectively. Please note that Kalahari Swaan and In Wag Van both carry an age restriction of 13 while Stofrooi is for the whole family.
