An evening at the #kykNETFiëstas2017

The kykNET Fiesta Awards has paid homage to creatives and role-players for their significant contribution towards theatre in South Africa throughout 2016. The awards give recognition to Afrikaans theatre festivals that provide a platform for artists to stage new productions. The first award ceremony was held in 2011 and has since grown rapidly in strength and popularity. The achievements of the nominees were celebrated at a gala event, which was held at the Artscape Theatre, Cape Town on Thursday, 23 February 2017. It was also broadcast live on kykNET (DStv Channel 144).

This year, the Vulture Productions team had the privilege of attending the awards ceremony, immersed with many performing arts legends. Upon arrival, the tone for a glamorous evening was set with an elegant blue carpet adorning the Artscape Piazza, stylish couture, and chirpy, happy attendees. The guests were greeted by crafty, physical and intense performances by dancers from New World Dance Theatre. As expected, the Fiestas had a breathtaking set, accompanied by a simplistic yet practical lighting design, which gave The Artscape Opera House great aesthetic appeal.

A dynamic team of four young directors (Nico Scheepers, Amy Jephta, Wolf Britz and Steven Van Wyk) were selected as part of a mentorship programme and were given the task to direct multiple segments which included performances by Arno Carstens, Corlea Botha and Thembeka Mnguni, accompanied by the Tygerberg Children's Choir and Cape Town Philharmonic Youth Orchestra.

Distinct moments of joy were stimulated by extracts from various festival productions such as Hensop!, Heidi, Pa and Kristalvlakte. I commend the kykNET producers for indirectly bringing theatre to the masses by broadcasting it to television audiences.

A sombre, yet reflective atmosphere soon filled the space as tribute was paid to performers, artists, writers and other industry greats who have passed away. This was accompanied by a heartwarming rendition of Panis Angelicus, sung by a trio of the Tygerberg Children's Choir. Special congratulations to the winners who made the night possible:
