Mama is a character-piece, showcased through poetry and physical theatre. The character communicates through body language accompanied by musical performance poetry and spoken word by the “mixed but not fixed” creative artist: Chenal Kock, who portrays the character as a vessel to confront reality.
The story is told through 7 chapters that focus on life emerging themes; rebirth, identity, cultural, self -discovery, language, freedom and, the state of being, all of which is explored with the use of the Afrikaaps dialect. Mama was initially created by Kock while she was a student at Stellenbosch University and further explored during her residency at The Forgotten Angle Theatre Collaborative based in Limpopo. It was adapted for the stage after collaborating with Le Cordeur during their arts-residency representing The Artscape Theatre Centre and South-Africa at Brouhaha International in the UK.
The work was first staged as a 5min performance at unity theatre in collaboration with Brouhaha International and developed it further for a 30min showcase at the first-ever US Woordfees Fringe program in Stellenbosch. Thereafter, we presenting the full production at Artscape Theatre in Cape Town CBD.
